Magnon excitations have been investigated for PrMnO$$_{3}$$ showing the $textit{A}$-type antiferromagnetic ordering and TbMnO$$_{3}$$ forming a long-period spin ordering by inelastic neutron scattering. Combined with a result of LaMnO$$_{3}$$ [K.~Hirota $textit{et al.}$], the systematic data revealed that the ferromagnetic exchange interaction between nearest-neighbor (NN) Mn sites within the $$ab$$ plane drastically decreases in $$R$$MnO$$_{3}$$ as the ionic radius of $$R$$ is reduced. In addition, finite next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) coupling is evident in TbMnO$$_{3}$$. In contrast, the exchange interaction along the $$c$$ axis shows much weaker $$R$$ dependence consistent with the Mn-O-Mn bond angle. These observations confirm a scenario that explains the evolution of spin structures in $$R$$MnO$$_{3}$$ in terms of the competition between the NN and NNN interactions [T.Kimura $textit{et al.}$].

Current research in the perovskite and layered perovskite-type manganese oxides has expanded to include the study of electronic and magnetic properties such as the colossal magnetoresistance (CMR), orbital ordering and charge ordering. The O K$$alpha$$ soft X-ray emission and absorption spectra (XES and XAS) of La$$_{1.2}$$Sr$$_{1.8}$$Mn$$_{2}$$O$$_{7}$$ were measured at selected excitation energies in order to investigate the electronic structure. The measurements were carried out by using a soft X-ray emission spectrometer at beamline BW3 at HASYLAB, Germany. The dependence of O K$$alpha$$ XES on excitation-energy was observed. It is attributed the different site of oxygen ions.

Addendum to $lqlq Doping-Dependent Magnetic Structure of Tb$_{1-x}$$Ca$$_{x}$$MnO$$_{3}$$ rqrq

Journal of the Physical Society of Japan, 72(5), P. 1312, 2003/05

In order to investigate interrelation between the lattice structure and the magnetic structure, we have performed Rietveld structural analysis on the neutron powder patterns for Tb$$_{1-x}$$Ca$$_{x}$$MnO$$_3$$ at low temperature. In the concentration range of $$0.65 leq x leq 0.85$$, we observed the Bragg reflections due to the CE-like- and C-type structures. In this range, the powder patterns were reproduce by the two-phase model with $$Pnma$$ and $$P2_{1}/m$$ symmetries. The fractions of these phases change against concentration $$x$$. This variation of the fraction for the $$Pnma$$ phase is similar to the variation of the integrated intensities of the CE-like-type magnetic Bragg reflections. This indicates that the $$Pnma$$ phase is responsible for the CE-like spin-ordering. Furthermore, we discussed interrelation between the detailed lattice structure and magnetic structure.

We report resonant inelastic x-ray scattering experiments of the orbitally ordered manganite LaMnO$$_3$$. When incident photon energy is tuned near the Mn $$K$$ absorption edge, the spectra reveal three features at 2.5 eV, 8 eV and 11 eV. The 8 eV and 11 eV peaks are ascribed to transitions from the O 2$$p$$ bands to the empty Mn 3$$d$$ and $$4s$$/$$4p$$ bands, respectively. On the other hand, the 2.5 eV peak is considered an orbital excitation across the Mott gap, ${it i.e.}$ an electron excitation from the effective lower Hubbard band with the $$d_{3x^2-r^2}$$ and $$d_{3y^2-r^2}$$ orbital characters to the upper Hubbard band with the $$d_{y^2-z^2}$$ and $$d_{z^2-x^2}$$ ones. The weak dispersion and characteristic azimuthal angle dependence of this excitation are well reproduced by a theory which includes orbital degeneracy and strong electron correlation.
